I had a great time at the AIA Open Architecture event this weekend. It was great to talk with Austin architects about their new projects and to see where they work. Given my recent reclaimed bowling lane table project, I was a big fan of this entry walkway at the Hurt Partners office:

This is made of pieces of the old gym floor from Concordia University. How cool!

Join the members of AIA Austin in the 2010 OPEN ARCHITECTURE event, an “open house” of twenty-two Architects’ Studios in the Downtown Area. See where and how the magic happens inside these creative downtown businesses, hear plans for future projects and developments straight from the Architects themselves and experience the unique styles and personalities of each studio. Maps will be provided so you may tour the studios at your own pace. Refreshments will be served.

The area’s only all-modern home tour embarks on its fifth year of benefiting Blue Ribbon School Hexter Elementary with a wonderful display of mid-century modern homes and a sustainable home.

Tour 4 mid-century modern homes near White Rock Lake.

2 of the 5 are Ju-Nel Homes. They were designed by Lyle Rowley and/or Jack Wilson, understudies of modern architecture pioneer Howard Meyer who built Dallas’ acclaimed Temple Emmanu-el. We broke the Ju-Nel story on the first tour in 2006, and subsequently in a D Home story.

1 of the 5 Homes is a “green” home designed by Alan Hoffmann, who D Magazine reported is a “green leader”.

Austin Outdoor Living Tour – April 17, 2010

Hopefully this beautiful weather holds because there’s a great outdoor event in Austin this weekend:

The Austin Outdoor Living Tour is this Saturday, April 17, 2010, from 10 AM to 6 PM. My good friends at modern pools have two beautiful designs on the tour, one of which is part of an amazing Cottam Hargrave designed home. This alone would probably be worth the $12 ticket!

Speechless in Seattle

Buy this Mid-Century Modern Masterpiece (MCMM) for $1!

It was designed by Paul Thiry, the ‘father of Northwest modernism’, and built in 1962. Here is a drawing from a 1967 magazine cover, and a full video tour below (well worth the 10 minutes):

Of course there is a catch, the new owner must pay ~$240,000 to have this ~200 ton house moved off of the waterfront lot . It gets worse, from the Seattle Times article:

It breaks the sisters’ hearts, then, to know that their childhood home — designed by Paul Thiry, the so-called “father of Northwest modernism” — risks being destroyed unless someone steps forward — probably within days — to claim it for its $1 price tag. The current owners, who live next door, have other plans for the site.

Travis Young – Architecture at the Umlauf

The next Architecture at the Umlauf program will be held this Thursday, April 1, where we will hear from Austin architect Travis Young.

Travis designed many of the Metrohouse infill projects around town, proving himself to be very skilled maximizing the design details on a developer’s budget. You also may have seen his work on the 2008 Cool Homes Tour (Shoal Creek Residence).

Last Minute Event: Visual Acoustics Showings

Wow! This looks really neat – a documentary about architectural photographer Julius Schulman, directed by Eric Bricker. The movie is playing at the Regal Arbor Cinema this weekend. It looks like the director will take questions after the 2:50 show tomorrow. Here are links and details:

1011 Canyon Edge – Sketchup Flyby

One of the great things about specializing in modern architecture is that I often have access to architectural drawings & models of a home (in addition to beautiful photos). In the case of 1011 Canyon Edge I have some of the original architectural drawings, but also a Sketchup model:

Since Google enabled the integration of Sketchup models into Google Earth, I thought it would be cool to record a flyby through the canyon. Let me know what you think in the comments below, and don’t forget to come by the open house on Sunday!
