Good to hear from you Chad! Your project will be a good example for those wishing to build a high-performance home without breaking the budget. I hope you can hit your $100/sqft number! We'll all be counting the pennies with you.

Thanks for the comments on our 100k house project. Labor costs can vary significantly based on location but for the NE this is a pretty aggressive goal for us. We are trying to put our budget into that quality of the envelope and mechanicals to yield the most efficient home possible for the budget. We are using good design to allow us to "skimp" on the finishes which the homeowner can upgrade to their tastes over the years easier than they can upgrade the shell of mechanical design...

We have gotten a bit of our inspiration from architecture and open minded individuals in Austin as well. Keep up the good work!

Thanks Matt!
I think the Austinist makes a good point about further East Austin FAR restrictions - it seems to primarily take value away from current residents.
On the $100k house, I'm budgeting a remodel right now. We'll see how close I can get to $100/sqft.
Have a happy and safe new year!

Ryan,
As usual, great links! I love reading your "best of"...
Hate to see that East Austin is getting more restrictive on house sizes. It's not easy to build with the McMansion ordinance, let alone with a small lot. I sure hope that doesn't pass.
Loved the link about the 100k house. That's a blog I'll definitely keep up with. I'd say if you polled Middle Class American's what it costs to build a custom home they'd peg it at $100/sq foot. Mass production guys do it all day long but the quality bar is "low" shall we say.
Love to hear that HelioVolt is making a strong Austin showing. Hope they can ramp it up and drop those prices!
Have a great Christmas. Matt Risinger
