Since I posted on the contest I thought I had better post on the results. Sadly neither the Longhorns nor the Aggies made it to the podium in the 2007 Solar Decathlon. Here are the top 3 finishers:

First Place: Universitat Darmstadt
First Place: Universitat Darmstadt

Second Place: University of Maryland
Second Place: University of Maryland

Third Place: University of Maryland
Third Place: University of Maryland

And here are the final scores:

For more details/photos on the winning home, check out this post: Inhabitat: Germany Wins the 2007 Solar Decathlon!. Here’s an excerpt:

Combining the manufacturing expertise of Volkswagen with a beautiful modern design sensibility, the Technische Universität Darmstadt’s wowed the crowds this week at the 2007 Solar Decathlon with their gorgeously innovative Solar Decathlon home. The Darmstadt home combines both high-tech active solar and low-tech passive solar components into smart operable building envelope of movable photovoltaic shutters. This clever solar shutter system bears more than a passing resemblance to old school German wooden shutters — only writ large, spanning every exterior surface of house and covered with photovolaic panels that generate electricity while they simultaneously shade the house from the sun.

For all scores from each of the 10 contests check out the Solar Decathlon 2007 Final Results page as well as the Photo Gallery of Homes.

Based on the photos, which home do you like the best? Based purely on aesthetics, I like Penn State, Darmstadt, and UT.

I liked U of Missouri, and UT’s…How cool would that be to drop one of these in a neighborhood and move in the next day. Makes me wonder what homebuilding will look like in 100 years. I wonder if Austin has any zero energy houses?

Great question. We should have a few by 2015.

I am not aware of any in Austin today. I googled around a bit and found this article about Barley Pfieffer’s Zero Energy Home for a Dallas parade of homes (PDF link): “Zero Energy Home” to debut at 13th Annual Dallas Parade of Homes. If they can build one in Dallas…
