The Best Modern Houseblogs

In my previous post DIY Modern Homes in Austin I mentioned two excellent Austin blogs about building/remodelling modern homes. Generally called ‘houseblogs’, these sites document the author’s journey through their project, usually from concept to completion, and sometimes beyond.

These authors are very candid throughout the process, making their blogs a great source of education, insight & ideas. It’s also a lot of fun to ride in the emotional roller coaster with the homeowner, rooting for them the whole way. While I haven’t started one (yet), I imagine these blogs serve as a nice way for people to document for posterity, vent for sanity, seek support, and gain new friends.

I have learned about many new materials and technologies from these blogs. There is solid advice about design, contracting, and building a home. Perhaps the stories of mistakes, oversights, pitfalls and general catastrophes are of greatest use. If it weren’t for these brave building pioneers, we readers might end up making the same mistakes. Enjoy!
