Excellent details. Thanks Matt!

Incandescent can lights are some of the worst offenders, as they not only generate significant heat, but can also puncture the insulation between the ceiling and the roof.

I think many people worry that Compact Fluorescent lights will make their home appear pale or yellow. The tour was great as it allows us all to experience these new CFL lights. With a CRI of 84 and a Color Temperature of 2700 K you can hardly tell the difference. I'd like to see the new shared electronic ballast CFL fixtures becoming more common in California (due to Title 24 - another future post!).

Thanks for the complements about the efficient bulbs featured in our 2006 Elton Lane house. How cool to hear that someone changed out all their bulbs when they got home! It's amazing what you can do to your electricity bill by switching to more efficient lighting. Not only do you save on the electricity to produce the light but you'll save on the A/C bills in our hot climate by reducing the heat load. Each 100 watt bulb is said to add another human body's worth of heat generation to your house. If you've got 10 incandescent bulbs on in your kitchen it's like having a party of people in the house. LED's (Lighting Science Group) or Compact Fluorescent (Maxlite A19) are the two main lighting choices we used at Elton Lane. - Matt Risinger

Thanks for all the info ! My vote goes to House #7 for use of interesting materials and optimal orientation for the view. I liked the layout of #5 the best.....I could definitely live there. Finally, I really liked all of the green features in House #3. I'm looking forward to next year!

It was an interesting tour....good to see the green features. I got inspired and changed all my bulbs at my house to compact fluorescents.

And I agree with you, that Home 7, at the end of the private drive was probably my favorite. Really secluded, but at the same time, really great use of outdoor space and natural light inside.

There's a modern home tour in the fall, right?
