Don’t miss my favorite Austin home tour of the year – The Cool House Tour – produced by the Texas Solar Energy Society and Austin Energy Green Building.

Why is this tour so great you ask? Because not only can you see the beautiful (and efficient) homes, but you also get to meet the home owners, builders, architects, etc. involved in the project. This can be a great resource for anyone with a green remodel in their future.

Austin is a perfect place for a Green Homes tour because we’ve been ‘building green’ here for many years, and with the growing mainstream interest in green building, the rest of the world is starting to notice.

This Old House Green Remodel

In fact, a home in Austin was chosen for a ‘This Old House‘ Green Remodel because our Green Building Program is one of the largest and oldest in the nation. The Austin home featured on last season’s This Old House achieved a 5-star rating from Austin Energy, and is part of this year’s Cool House Tour.

Here is an overview of the green remodel, and the homeowners blog of the process. Even their Gardens won an award!

The above links include lots of great info and information on the design and the subcontractors on the project. Of course, you can meet many of them on the tour this Sunday.

[...] For my personal remodel/addition project I am leaning towards spray foam insulation for walls and for the underside of the roof decking (for my unvented attic). Spray Foam is generally more expensive than most of the other options, however it provides a good R value in addition to an air-tight seal. It is a common feature in many of the homes on the annual Austin Energy Cool Homes Tour. [...]
